About Us

The GSO's first concert, Hoff Theatre, 2006.

The University of Maryland Gamer Symphony Orchestra is the first and only college orchestra dedicated solely to playing video game music. We currently have more than 50 instrumentalists and singers! All of our music is arranged in-house by our own members. Many of our sections are open and we are currently recruiting from the University of Maryland student body.

The GSO was founded in Fall 2005 by a small group of students from the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra. Discovering they all shared a strong passion for video game music, they tried to create an independent music group dedicated to that genre. Our very first rehearsal had a mere five members in attendance. However, over time, the tiny group attracted attention from all over the campus community. In the Fall of 2007, the GSO had even begun its own chorus. Today, after three short years, we have members from all musical backgrounds, and from all walks of life. We enjoy exciting diversity in the GSO, as well as a very strong sense of harmony -- both musical and social.

Trivia

Tommy Tallarico, composer for the Earthworm Jim series and Advent Rising, is the cousin of Stephen Tyler, Aerosmith's lead singer.
